What is a Labiaplasty Revision/Labiaplasty Reconstruction?
When you seek out a highly trained professional with years of experience to perform your labiaplasty procedure, you more than likely will not have any issues at all with the results and healing. However, if you are receiving a labiaplasty procedure from a doctor who is less than qualified, or who performs a less-than-stellar job, you may wish to have another doctor take a look. If you are on the receiving end of a botched labiaplasty, there is good news: even if the doctor reassures you that everything is fine, a second opinion can correct any issues that you may still have concerns about. There are several different types of labiaplasty revisions/labiaplasty reconstructions available, depending on your needs.
Different Types Of Revisions/Reconstructions Needed
There are several different types of labiaplasty revisions/labiaplasty reconstructions available, depending on your needs.
Too Much Cut Off
One scenario that is cause for concern is when “too much” is removed during a labiaplasty. This occurs when the surgeon pulls on the labia when he or she is doing the trimming of the tissue, and accidentally removes too much of the labia. While this can happen, and the tissue cannot be “regrown,” it can be fixed if enough tissue is left behind around the clitoral hood area. If there is enough tissue, a “V-Y” reconstruction can be performed. This is done when there is additional tissue around the clitoral hood area left by the original surgeon, which can be used to change the appearance of the labia to better suit the outcome wished for.
Too Much Separation
In some instances, the anastomosis, or the connection between the incisions on the labia, can separate. This can occur due to a failed technique, because of a hematoma or healing issues, or it can be the result of an issue on the patient’s side, such as smoking or diabetes. When this happens, it can usually be fixed in one of two ways. Often a quick trim of the tissue can help to repair the separation, but depending on the severity, another procedure may need to be done in order to repair the separation and reduce scarring.
Not Enough Cut Off
Another common concern that can lead to a woman wanting a labiaplasty revision happens when not enough of the tissue is removed during the initial labiaplasty procedure. Perhaps the patient had other ideas in mind for how the labia would look, and the amount of tissue removed during the procedure was not what they were hoping for. This tends to occur when the surgeon removing the tissue is nervous about how much to remove, is inexperienced, or when the doctor and patient do not have proper communication. Unlike the problems that arise when too much is cut off, this is much more easily fixed, simply by undoing the previous procedure and then redoing the labiaplasty again, this time with the desired results.
Clitoral Hood Too Prominent
A fourth type of labiaplasty reconstruction that can be done is when the clitoral hood is too prominent, or not altered to the patient’s liking. When this occurs, a revision is done to shape the clitoral hood to make it less prominent.
Risks of a Labiaplasty Reconstruction/Labiaplasty Revision
As with any other medical procedure, there are certain risks that are associated with a labiaplasty reconstruction/labiaplasty revision. To avoid an increase in these risks, it is important to wait until the botched labiaplasty procedure has healed – at least six to eight weeks after the initial labiaplasty procedure is performed is usually ideal. This will help you heal from the reconstruction much easier, and it will also help your doctor to perform the necessary steps of the reconstruction.
Some of the risks that can be associated with the labiaplasty revision procedure include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Redness
- Itching and irritation
- Bruising
- Infection
If the pain, swelling, redness, and itching do not subside in the doctor’s suggested timeframe, or if you believe your incisions may be infected, it is important to contact your doctor right away.
