Who doesn’t have concerns about their skin? From acne scars and fine lines to redness and stretch marks, most of us can point out at least one flaw we’d love to erase. Microneedling can make that vision a reality by helping rid your body of many of these issues.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or skin needling, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure. It can help minimize signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and rejuvenate skin. This cosmetic procedure encompasses using tiny, sterile needles to repeatedly puncture the skin. The vibrations from these needles stimulates collagen production. Some studies have shown that when combined Minoxidil, it can also effectively treat hair loss.
How Does It Work?
When the skin ages or encounters injuries it loses collagen. During this procedure the needles that are pressed into the skin encourage collagen growth. Basically, the concept is that the slight injury caused by the tiny needles will cause the skin to respond by producing new tissue. The new skin tissue will be more even in tone and texture.
Why Is It Popular?
With no downtime, virtually no pain and few side effects, microneedling has become an increasingly popular option for a variety of skin ailments. After the treatment, some minor redness and irritation is all that the majority of patients experience. The procedure is safe for most individuals, as long as they’re in overall good health. Pregnant women, individuals using certain acne medications and those who have certain skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema, are not candidates for this procedure.
How Long Does It Take?
From preparation to completion, the entire procedure takes about two hours. For optimal results, at least four procedures are recommended. In addition, the procedure is only safe if it’s completed by an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Ghozland.
How Effective is Microneedling?
Most patients report brighter, firmer skin after just a few sessions. It’s also effective at reducing the appearance of minor acne scarring, stretch marks, fine lines and other scars. In addition, sun spots and aging eyelids can be treated with microneedling.
What Areas Does It Treat?
Microneedling is usually used on the face to target:
- Age or sun spots
- Acne scars
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Large pores
- Uneven skin tone
- Other scars
It can also be used to treat stretch marks on the legs and abdomen.
What To Expect During and After Treatment?
About an hour before your treatment begins, your physician will begin by applying a topical anesthetic to reduce any chance of pain. The microneedling process takes about 30 minutes total. During the 30-minute or so procedure, your doctor will move the tool evenly across your skin.
After the treatment is completed your doctor will apply a serum or calming treatment. Expect to spend a couple of hours in the office. You can return to work immediately following the procedure.
How Should I Prepare for the Treatment?
You might need to stop taking certain medications before the procedure. In addition, you may need to stop using topical retinoids before proceeding with microneedling, depending on what your doctor says.
What are the Side Effects?
Redness and some skin irritation are common following the procedure. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, therefore sunscreen is a necessity. If you experience bleeding, bruising, infection or peeling, contact your doctor immediately.
